my relationship to the internet has been one of apprehension and fear.

At the age of thirteen (in 2013) I joined Instagram. I remember me and my friend Stephen asking our father’s permission to make profiles at the same time. This was my first ever social media account. My earliest memory at the time I had made the account is of a basketball player who had sustained a shocking injury on live television. Images of his tibia protruding from his leg with Instagram filters over top were plastered all over my feed by classmates of mine, with the hashtag #PrayForKevinWare. Kevin Ware fully recovered and continued a very successful professional basketball career for many years.

Me and my middle school friends would listen to music on a site called Grooveshark. We had usernames like Metalhead656 or JayIsUndead. We listened to and shared with one another artists like Tokio Hotel, Attack Attack, Black Veil Brides, Asking Alexandria, and System Of A Down. In the summer of 2015, the site closed down suddenly due to massive copyright infringement. We lost our music libraries and the founder of Grooveshark, Josh Greenberg, was found dead in his bed by his girlfriend immediately after its closure. There was no sign of foul play or suicide, and his autopsy failed to determine a cause of death. He was 28 years old. We moved onto Spotify.

During this period, I also became hungry for knowledge of the internet's cultural history, and would obsessively browse the hundreds of thousands of entries on the website Know Your Meme. I lived vicariously through this website, learning about the strange histories of 4chan, Reddit, YouTube, ebaumsworld, YTMND, and became enthralled with creepypasta's and ARG's (Alternate Reality Game). All of these strange references, inside jokes, and esoteric, vauge pieces of contextless images were something I was completely enamoured by (and still am).

Below is a short list of creepypasta-adjacent images that have had a deep impact on my psyche and aesthetic values.

I created a Twitter account in 2017 during my high school Social Studies class. Our teacher required the whole class to make profiles so we could “keep up on current events”, which in hidsight is kind of fucking insane. My friend Jayson joked that his username would be @psychokillerdrugdealer. I do not remember what my initial username was. It was a place where I witnessed a lot of ugly and confusing things. It was also a place where I could follow a bunch of inspiring artists, musicians, and content creators. I liked treating tweeting like an expulsion of the dumbest and most immediate thought in my brain; the dumber and more abstract, the more fun. It is also a place where I witnessed lots and lots of brutalization, death, pornography, psychosis, and fascism. I stopped using it a month ago, for it became a corpse.

In 2019 I started an alternative Instagram account that my friends did not know about as an art outlet. I came up with the username @indoorzzz, based on my experience as a self-imposed shut-in. The page was meant to be a secret platform where I could post my really gay artwork. I started tracing shirtless selfies of guys that were posted to the site, and made these weird illustrated collages. During the pandemic I got really serious about making artwork, and started posting pretty regularly. I still post on this account to this day, though I no longer consider myself a shut-in.
